Alright, you guys know how this goes. And I am indeed going to ask something from you this week. We’ve got a LONG way to go to get Robin even the tiniest bit of resemblance to the life she once had. While she got GREAT news about her legs today, she received some devastating news that government financial aid will not cover all the costs with her hands, nor her assistance dog. So these are some of the bigger next steps, and our most daunting challenges. And you? So many of you have given already. So I’m not asking you […]

If you haven’t signed up yet, don’t miss it! The 30 Day TRIBE experiment is exploding with ideas and inspirations! The first to be put to use? A book (and gift) club centered around the pay-it-forward movement. Check out the club here. What’s exciting about this venture is the handmade touches inside each book. From a note to a wish to a doodle to a full on work of art, each package will have a little something extra, so that you, as the recipient, can experience a little bit of Christmas magic all year round. Here’s a photo of some […]

As I explore the meaning of tribe, and what we each seek to gain from the experience of tribal connection, something occurs to me. While we all ache to be in the presence (physically) of a group we find both stimulating and meaningful, I am sensing the bigger issue here is the desire to be fully seen and embraced (or re-membered, as I like to call it.) Physical gatherings, when they occur with intention and purpose, provide a direct experience of kindling, because people show up. THEY SHOW UP. To the event, to the gathering, to the soul fire found […]

The Prince of Hearts stole the tarts or was it the Mad Hatter? He was last seen having tea and growing slightly fatter Said the March Hare “How can you care?” “Does it really matter?” Aye, it’s the Queen~ oh how she screams o’er the empty platter: “Off with his head! I’ll see him dead! I”ll leave his soul in tatters!” At the queen’s decree her court did flee you should have seen them scatter But Alice knew what she must do she grabbed a bowl and batter With kitchen smarts she baked new tarts and finished with a clatter […]

this is a silent poem a wordless poem a single moonpearl poem found at the bottom of a lake made of hushed footfalls at twilight and the fluid feathers of dawn this is a wordless poem because words fail me words like exquisite words like euphoric loosen their ballast and rise from the tongue as hot air balloons to be swallowed by renegade clouds in a carousel sky words like saffron and sublime silken sumptuous words like plump pillows stuffed with lavender kisses, embroidered with heathered hopes strewn across an opium bed fold in on themselves, falling away from my […]

In July of 2000, I drove myself to Daytona Beach, 20 minutes west of my house in muggy, Central Florida to see Disney’s new film “The Kid.” I love most anything with Bruce Willis and the previews for this film were particularly fetching. I bought some Raisinets and settled into my chair in the darkened theater. The hour-and-a-half celluloid passed in a blink. This is what happened in the dark: The main character in the film, Russ Duritz, a sharp, clean cut, professional image consultant, who is about to turn forty, meets up with his pudgy, lisping, unkempt eight year […]

She fell asleep dreaming of fairy tales and tattoos. And sometime between moonset and sunrise, a bumble bee hummed across the pages of her heart. He made a hive in Once Upon a Time, and honeycombs in Happily Ever After, and on the pages in between, he scattered pollen and sunshine, night blooming jasmine and foxglove. He offered cherry blossoms to the dark and brooding thoughts, forget me nots to the lonely, forgotten places. And in the morning, she awoke tasting the golden truth of her, like honey tucked inside the roses of her cheeks. I saw […]

art by fantasim You never realize just how much stuff you’ve invited into your life until you have to pack it all up and haul it somewhere. Today I’m packing up life in cardboard boxes. Time to move. I marvel at the ways passion and devotion can equal accumulation: books, records, ticket stubs, playbills, love letters, photographs, receipts for purchases both large and small. I’ve spent ten years in this house and the remnants of proof call for assessment. I scrutinize each object, asking, “How does this serve me? Should I leave it behind? How about that? Shall I take […]

A juicy little project has taken up residence in my writerly fingertips. It’s a collection of wee fairy tales. I can’t seem to force these guys out, but when they show up, it’s always a delight. I feel less like I’m creating them and more like I’m discovering them. Like little lost friends, newly found. I’ll be posting more from time to time, but if you want to keep up with the collection in its thus-far entirety, visit and “like” the official Forgotten Fables page on Facebook, here. The Pink Ukelele and the Firework was the first story to appear […]

I’m back! After almost two years offline, I’m back and on Resurrection Day, no less. I didn’t plan this. In fact, I’m surprised, really. But when I woke up today, I knew it was time. I just love when inspiration knocks at my door. So, hi. And knock knock. That’s inspiration knocking on YOUR door. Let’s get this party started.

I. presents not a single one under the tree nothing shopped for, trussed up, unwrapped. it is a lean christmas, and as the days go by we think, “soon. perhaps soon.” but the days go by and the bank account has other needs mom flies into town from Austin and we decorate the tree snip pine boughs from the spruce in our yard and fill the house with the scent of solstice and the easy silly laughter that comes only from years spent together under a common roof. on christmas eve we drive up Taos Mountain to the authentic bavarian […]
